Churchill Square
Kent | Capital Enterprise Centres | Completed
A group of former MOD buildings that previously provided accommodation, social and catering facilities to World War II airmen, have been conserved and adapted to form a vibrant business centre, providing flexible commercial accommodation.
The buildings were listed during the course of the refurbishment and although this led to procedural delays, the design intention of the scheme was not altered.
The H shaped buildings lent themselves to efficient conversion - the position of the entrances are obvious to visitors, the internal circulation can be simplified, and the proportion of the wings make for suitable naturally ventilated spaces. The use of thick walled masonry and in-situ concrete floors and roofs in the original construction also provide high ‘thermal mass’ that also contributes to internal temperature stability.
