A mixed-use infill project on the site of a former petrol station, the main part of the building facing Clerkenwell Road has a retail space on the ground floor and offices space on the floors above.
To the rear the building opens onto the quieter St John's Square, offering another retail unit, a small workshop and eight apartments.
A passage through the building creates a new pedestrian connection across the site.
A BREEAM rating of Excellent is anticipated, with over 20% of energy requirements being met by on-site renewables.
At 100 Clerkenwell Road daylight analysis showed that vertical shading would have more effect than typical horizontal shading, due to site position and overshadowing from neighbouring buildings. This analysis had serious implications for the design of the façade.
Deep reveals were designed in conjunction with metal louvres to restrict the high summer sun from penetrating deep into the office space thus preventing over-heating in the peak summer months. Argon filled solar controlled low emmisivity glazing units with a low mid pane u-value, also help to prevent excessive heat gain while allowing natural light into the spaces.
