Derwenthorpe Masterplan

New build residential

Derwenthorpe

York | Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust | Under Construction

One of the first large scale low carbon communities in Northern England, Derwenthorpe brings together the complex ideas of identity, community, material sensibilities, public spaces and landscape into a singular harmonious place for the residents, creating a beautiful sense of place for those living there. The new neighbourhood reads as an extension of York, rather than a greenfield build.

Green infrastructure lies at the heart of the masterplan, with the open space shaped by flood prevention and landscaping for biodiversity. The design focused on the creation of high-quality public space, with careful attention given to the design of streets, play areas, landscape and parking courtyards to ensure that all spaces were subject to overlooking and that play areas and recreational facilities were close to homes.

An energy centre was built at the heart of the scheme in its initial phases, and this incorporated teaching and generous community spaces, helping to provide a focus and resource for the emerging community.

The quality landscaping and the pedestrianised design of the estate all add to a sense of joy and well- being. This is a genuinely inspirational space to live.
