Fitzroy Street
Cambridge | Jesus College Cambridge | Completed
The redevelopment of 2-14 Fitzroy Street for Jesus College, Cambridge, provided a rare opportunity to establish a high quality landmark that contributes to the improving street scene of this busy pedestrian thoroughfare.
The life-expired 1950s retail unit, which formerly occupied the site, was replaced by an elegant and carefully detailed building of brick and reconstituted stone. Sensitive repairs to the adjacent listed houses, also owned by the college, were undertaken at the same time and included the rebuilding of the garden walls in reclaimed bricks and lime mortar.
The new building creates sufficient presence to mark the transition between Fitzroy Street and New Square while bringing coherence to the varied scales and materials of the surrounding buildings.
